If Zines Could Talk (DIYPINOYHCPUNK Zine Convention, Punk Bazaar, and Veggie Fest)

This is the last installment of the month long DIYPINOYHCPUNK "This IS Not A Punk Show" celebration. hopefully, this event will inspire to roll out a "physical zine" again. It's been years since the last time I fold a photocopied cut n' paste paper. Fortunately, there are still fanzines left in the wild, such as I Remember Halloween, Real Tight Crew, Konspira Zine, Incidental Afterthought, Aspire, Beleive, and few more.

Nowadays, it’s pretty rare to find a print zine without an online presence (or should i say e-zine, like this one?), but still, printed zine or tangible object are far more valuable. Aside from zines, five of my fave bands will be playing. Its expected to see a Guerra Mundial to hit the stage laughing while banging the night with their unique "DIS" tune. Malolos pop punkers The diary Of The Old Mango Tree reminds of me some 90's skate punk band. Ginseng will definitely treat you with their post-punk tune. This will be the final show of Shirley Steinberg, they remind me of some Ebullution-styled hardcore - a good mix of technical hardcore and melodic breakdowns. Hope to see Monochrome close the show, I mean their songs fits perfectly to end a show, and all you have to do is to stand or sit listen, watch , and be amaze. To those uninitiated, Monochrome is a post-rock band with solid Mono / This Will Destroy You backbone.

More details about the event posted here.

Admission to this event is free with awesome veggie goodness.

All Day Hell

Another old interview, All Day Hell in an anarcho hardcore punk from Poland. their tunes remind me of some neocrust bands, such as Tragedy, HHIG, and Catharsis - melodic, crust, and dark as fucking hell. I've met Mike via Myspace and this interview was conducted through series of email exchanges. just like the previous interview posts, this is kinda old, but still worth checkin.. The recently released a split 7 with Panacea under In Our Hands record.  you can also download their self titled EP on the download link posted below. So here's the interview...

BTW: Thanks Mike for answering this interview, and check your mail mate :D
TOGC: Please introduce the band... And could you please tell us something about your life and the rest of the members.

ALL DAY HELL was formed in 2005. From the beginning only one member had been changed- our bass player. In 2005-2006 Kuba played with us. Since 2006 Pieczara is our bass player. So now ALL DAY HELL crew is ZBYCHO – guitar; Kamil – guitar; JANEK – vox.; MIKE – drum; and PIECZARA – bass; To cut the long story short, I can say that apart from being drummer in All Day Hell band I play also in two other bands from our city (these bands are: Czas Złamać Prawo- in english it means 'It's time to break the law; and second one calls Life Scars), I create 'Choice is ours' zine, which 3rd issue will be published, I hope,in nearest future. with Zbych and other friends we organise diy/punx/hc gigs at 'Zakazny' squat (in english 'Zakazny' means 'Contageous') where at times we organise also workshops and lectures, and in winter we make Food not Bombs action. 'Zakazny' squat is a place, which we create from the very beginning, which we look after in many cases (e.g. parties, renovating, redecorating), and we feel really responsible for it. We put great part of our energy in this place and in events connected with this place. In addition, I can say that I've just finished one of my studies at university and I continue second major and from this academic year I'm starting part time job as windsurfing and skiing instructor.

TOGC: one of the lines that makes me a little confuse on one of your song is; "your bodies do
not belong to you, your time is just a commodity, your souls belong to god, against whom reason rebels" (from the song All Day Hell), Where did those lyrics came from, and what do you mean by that? What are your thoughts about god(s) and religious matters?

This is Kamil's lyric so he knows answer to this question best.

Kamil: The lyrics is generally about alienated work in the capitalist reality, which is just another name for slavery – the state in which it is the people you work for decide about what you should do with your time, where you should go and how you should behave there, as if you were some kind of a puppet whose body belonged to its master. When you work you exchange your time for products you need, the time you spend at your workplace becomes a commodity. The products you buy are dead objects and the time you spend at work to be able to buy them is also dead. In this lyrics God appears only in its symbolic meaning, as someone who is in power; it is a metaphysical image of a boss, king, landlord, policeman – whom we are taught to respect despite the fact that our reason and intuition tells us that they are our worst enemies, who have never acted to our benefit. What i think about god and religion should be obvious from what i have already said.

TOGC: Obviously, All Day Hell is a very angry band... where were you coming from lyrically? what makes/keeps you anger?

Inspirations to my lyrics are my own observations, my thoughts, reflections about
topics like relationships between people, local problems, and global problems like ecological issues and terrorism. During Writing lyrics I try not to repeat topics that were used by many other bands years ago, but sometimes it turns out that lyrics that bands were singing let's say 10 years ago is dead right and such topic is still current and from that time nothing has changed. Seeing that it is hard to not say something about ecology or environmental degradations for example.

TOGC: The other day, you told me through email regarding the anarchist headquarter in your area, the "squat zakazny".. So how this squat / projects works? Also I want to ask the collective’s goals and plans that they want to / planning to achieve in this squat/community center. What activities and projects accomplished into that building? And how do bourgeois react into the area? How’s the squat scene there in general?

Yes, 'Zakazny' Squat is very important place for us and time spent there and actions that we make are very important part of our life and great body of knowledge. Squat 'Zakazny' is a part of buildings that used to belong to old hospital. We squatted it in 2005 and then after half a year we had an appointment with owner and as a result our existence and activity at 'Zakazny' from that time is legal. We planned to live at our squat, but it is hard to do so nobody lives there because of lack of running water, gas, electricity, street lamps, fences around the building etc. So this place works as a D.I.Y centre of independent culture, in which apart from gigs (usually we have 1-2 gigs per month) we organise workshops and lectures connected with such problems as human rights, vegetarianism, fair trade, etc. In winter in our kitchen we prepare meal for FOOD NOT BOMBS action. We created library and we have there books and independent press. We had freeshop, but it doesn't work anymore. Both of this initiatives have met little interest of people that are not connected with our squat. For some time we had been organised with our friends Critical Mass, which at the beginning had many enthusiastic, but it was getting less in some time, especially in winter. And now few words about squat scene in Poland. Actually there is 8 squats, some of them is legal, some of them are not. The oldest one exsist in Poznan and it's ROZBRAT squat that this year has it's 14th birthday! From the beginning it's illegal. Actually there is eagerness time and waiting because of planning investment. More information you can find on Rozbrat's website. (http://www. rozbrat. org)

TOGC: Poverty, mass hunger, government’s over use of power, human and animal atrocities, racism and speciesm, war, global warming, globalization,(and so fucking more)… What can you say about the current state of the world today?

Well, this state is an effect of human's destructive activities that is getting intensified recently. That's the limit and it leads to destruction of natural harmony. Moreover, these times we can call THE AGE OF CONSUMPTION, which rarely go hand in hand with wise consumption and effects of this fact seem to get worst world's situation. Among other things about this fact tells one of songs that we have recorded recently - 'Eco Protest Song'. Other noticeable problem that seems to be result of culture of consumption, quick flow of information and easy access to information and all sort of media is lack of responsibility and consciousness. We can see it in young generation that grows up among promotion slogans, agressive marketing or TV stations like MTV. About this problem tells another our song that was recorded recently - 'Downfall Civilisation'. There is still many problems connected with globalization, which is hard to understand and people don't consider it. Especially now, people living at fast pace are satisfied with quick answers that receive from TV and such information shows only one side of the coin, like for example a problem of terrorism. Among other things about this problem tells our 'Echoes of War' song that comes from our the only one released album.

TOGC: What’s up with the upcoming record? How’s the production of the new record coming along?

In the end of August 2008 (TOGC: I told you that this is an old interview) we recorded some new songs that are going to come out as split CD with the band of our friends. When we go back from the tour we have to have done mixtapes and mastering and all the things connected with releasing our records.

TOGC: Please give us a list of bands, zines, projects, and groups/collectives in Poland that could be useful in the hardcorepunk community.

Huh, it would be very very much if I wrote at length about each project. Below I take you links to more general websites, which contains many links to individual people, bands, initiatives, squats and so on.- www. zakazny. 110mb. com- it's our squat's website, but for the moment it's only in polish. -at our myspace profile (myspace. com/alldayhellpunk) you can find links to Rozbrat's profiles and here you have link to their website http://www. rozbrat. org/, you can contact them regarding gigs or other initiatives from Poznań; you can find also in "top friends" links to CRK-Wrocław profile and CKN-Gliwice profile this like Rozbrat's profile, are very useful contacts. - http://elba. bzzz. net/ - this is website of Elba Squat from Warsaw, also works in resilient way. I think that there should be also contact to squatters.- http://www. squat. net/pl/index. html- it's link to Częstochowa- 'Elektromadonna' squat; - http://www. myspace. com/diydziura- this links is to initiatives from Węgrów and Siedlce that also can help with organising gigs etc- www. lublinattack. prv. pl - it's link to Lublin crew, we have friends there, that works resiliently since many years. They are involved in many initiatives, at their website you can find links to people and bands from Lublin and district and there should be some contact. And in short it will be all. If you need help with any cases contact me and I will try to help you or give you some accurate bearings.

TOGC: Since some of the members also plays in other band, knifes in the leg,- isn't this a problem? I mean, time, priorities and budget for the bands...

Yes it is. For most of us All Day Hell isn't the only one band that we played in. But I think that for the most part it is the most important one. Zbycho and I play in CZAS ZŁAMAĆ PRAWO (in english 'It's Time to Break the Law') - it's political anarcho-trash/punk; you can check this band out on All Day Hell profile in 'top friends'. I play also in LIFE SCARS band (garage-crust-punk; for the moment we have no recorded songs). Both of these projects are the bands from our city. Kamil that isn't from Biała Podlaska, but from small town situated 20 km from our city lives recently in Warsaw (170km from Biała Podlaska). Apart from ADH he plays also in Knife In The Leg and not so long time ago he started playing in The Fight band from Warsaw and also in 2 other bands. So the main difficulty is limited Kamil's time. He have to share his free time to rehearsals with few bands from different cities. So we can't make rehearsals as frequent as we want to. But when Kamil has an opportunity to come to Biała Podlaska we have rehearsal and from time to time we do it without him. But rehearsals without one guitar is rarity. With budget it's like that- if sometimes we receive more money from the gig, the money goes for Kamil, money from our distro goes also for Kamil. To lower the cost we use the way to get somewhere hitchhiking.

TOGC: Nazi movement over powered Poland way back WW2. So now, do you still have this fascist and racism problem there?

Yes, unfortunately. There are still some people for whom tragedies that are an effect of Nazism connected with 2nd World War are not an argument to put an end with this shitty ideology once and for all and don't allow to repeat such problems anywhere, anytime and in any way. In Poland there are still problems with Nazi assholes. But it doesn't touch all cities luckily. In our city we have minimal manifestation of such rubbish. But there are cities where problems with Nazi are still serious. But there are people from ANTIFA groups and similar initiatives that we support. They fight fascism at different levels.

TOGC: Please tell us something about the recent tour!!!

So from 1 September to 14 September we have first tour in history of our band. We have played 13 gigs (1 day off) in such countries as Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic. In every city we have met with warm reception. I think that during every gig people enjoyed our music. We have met many interesting people, we had an opportunity to play with many great bands. Especially good we remember gig in Latavian Preili, where our gig was the first hc/punk gig in history of this city! It's for us great honour ;) We hope that it will be a spark that will begin real revolution in this city. Apart from that we remember very nice gigs in Roznov (the Czech Republic), Kraków and of course in all cities. I think that we haven't any weak gigs. Oh, maybe 1;) I would like to thank organizers, people that give us food, people that gave us a place to sleep, bands that we had opportunity to play with and all the people that came to see our gig! THANX! These 14 days will be always in our memory!;)

TOGC: The interview has come to end. Now you can say something whatever you want!Any message to the readers? Thanks Mike for answering this questions! Be safe!

Hey Raymond! Thanx for interests, and for the interview! Good luck with d.i.y. punk/hc activity on Philippines! Support D.I.Y. movement! TAKE CARE!

DIY Art Discussion with Pilipinas Street Plan

This is part of a 4 week "This Is not A Punk Show" event of the DIYPINOYHCPUNK. The infamous Pilipinas Street Plan - whose work can be seen all over the Manila -  will participate in the event, so, if you are into what pasting, graffiti art, sticker bomb, street art, then you know what to do. Just head to Kalye Art Gallery and participate in the discussion. there'll be a how-to, tip tricks, and a lot more.. Of course, some HC punk bands...

No Peace In Silence

I apologize for my lack of posts lately due to the fact that my work basically taken all of my time. Today I bring you an interview with No Peace In Silence, a metal hardcore band from Pulilan, Bulacan. This was originally printed in my previous zine. No Peace In Silence is one of the flag bearers of metal hardcore here in Bulacan. They've been around for couple of years now; started as a punk outfit and evolve to a technical metallic hardcore that reminds me of some Swedish death metal stuff (new Swedish outfits). The following questions were answered by AJ, the band's vocalist. You get the idea...enjoy

TOGC - PLEASE TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THE BAND.

NPIS - NO PEACE IN SILENCE ARE THE VOICES OF THOSE WHO STRUGGLE TO SEARCH FOR THE REALMEANING AND PURPOSE OF EXISTENCE. THIS IS A WAY TO EXPRESS OUR FREEDOM THROUGH MUSIC AND SHARE HOPE THROUGH WORDS. AN OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK OUR MIND BECAUSE WE BELIEVE THAT EACH ONE OF US HAS THE RIGHT FOR A LIFE OF PEACE DESPITE THE IMPERFECTIONS WE MAY HAVE. NO PEACE IN SILENCE IS NOT JUST A BAND, IT IS AN IDEA WHICH REPRESENTS ANYONE WHO SEEKS FOR A CHANCE OF A BETTER WORLD. COME AND SING WITH US, COME AND BREATHE WITH US. YOU ARE FREE!

TOGC - I'VE PERSONALLY WITNESSED THE MUSICAL EVOLUTION OF THE BAND. YOU STARTED OUT ON A MORE PUNK FEELING (ALA DEAD ENDS), THEN YOU ADDED ANOTHER GUITAR TO DO A MORE NYHC STYLE, THEN NOW YOU SHIFT TO A MORE HEAVIER HARDCORE WITH A GOOD MIX OF METAL. SO, AFTER THESE MUSICAL STYLE CHANGES, WOULD YOU SAY THAT THIS IS THE SOUND THAT YOU WERE LOOKING FOR?

NPIS - HONESTLY, WE ARE NOT LOOKING FOR ANY PARTICULAR SOUND, WE APPRECIATE MUSIC AND HOW IT IS CREATED. WE CHOOSE TO BE US. EVERY MEMBER HAS THEIR OWN DIFFERENT MUSICAL INFLUENCES RANGING FROM PUNK TO METAL, THRASH TO HARDCORE AND EVEN INDIE TO GRUNGE. WE CREATE MUSIC THROUGH EACH CONTRIBUTING INDIVIDUAL TALENTS. MIX THEM ALL TOGETHER AND SKY IS THE LIMIT. NOT TO MENTION, CHANGES IN THE BAND'S LINE-UP HAD A GREAT EFFECT ON THE EVOLUTION. FOR NOW, WE WILL PLAY WHATEVER WE WANT TO PLAY, NO MATTER THE CONSEQUENCES MAYBE.

TOGC - IF WE CAN'T FIND PEACE IN SILENCE, DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHERE WE COULD FIND IT? DOES IT ALSO MEAN THAT SILENCE IS, MISLEADING US TO "FAKE" PEACE?

NPIS - YOU CAN FIND PEACE BY SEARCHING TO THE DEEPER MEANING OF LIFE. YOU WILL FIND PEACE BY EXPRESSING YOUR FREEDOM REGARDLESS OF THE RISKS. STANDING UP FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN. THAT WILL BREAK THE CHAINS OF SILENCE FROM YOUR HEART. YOU WILL FIND PEACE BY NOT PRETENDING TO BE SOMEONE ELSE AND JUST BE WHO YOU REALLY ARE. BEING TRUE TO YOURSELF KEEPS THE HONESTY IN YOUR SOUL. A PEACEFUL MIND GUIDED BY A PEACEFUL HEART IS A LIFE OF HAPPINESS DESPITE OF THE MESS THIS WORLD FEEDS US. SILENCE IS NOT PEACE WHEN THERE IS NO JUSTICE. THE SILENT SCREAMS FROM THE MILLIONS OF JEWS KILLED DURING THE HOLOCAUST IS NOT PEACE. THE SILENT CRIES OF THE TUTSI PEOPLE DURING THE RWANDAN GENOCIDE IS NOT PEACE. THE SILENCE OF HUNDREDS OF ACTIVISTS MISSING AND DYING DURING THE MARCOS' REGIME UNDER MARTIAL LAW, WE CANNOT CALL THAT PEACE. NINOY AQUINO WAS SILENCED BUT HIS SPIRIT AND HIS CAUSE WILL ALWAYS HAUNT ANY DICTATOR WHO ABUSES POWER.

TOGC -HARDCORE PUNK IS FULL OF ANGER, VERY AGGRESSIVE, VERY ANGER DRIVEN AND VERY NOISY (pun intended). BUT, ON THE OTHER SIDE HCPUNK IS FILLED WITH EMOTION, COMPASSION AND LOVE. SO DO YOU THINK THAT THE "PEACE" THAT WAS CONCEALED IN FULL OF ANGST SCENE?

NPIS - HARDCORE IS A VERY POWERFUL MUSIC. IT LETS US DO WHAT WE FUCKING WANT AND SAY WHAT WE WANT TO SAY. IT GIVES CONFIDENCE TO THOSE WHO ARE AFRAID TO SHOW THEIR FEELINGS. IT'S THE TYPE OF MUSIC WHERE WE CAN RELEASE OUR HATE WHEN WE ARE REALLY ANGRY AND SCREAM OUR LUNGS OUT IF ITS NECESSARY.

THIS IS WHERE REAL PEOPLE MEET. THE HONESTY OF THIS MUSIC DEFINES THE SPIRIT OF UNITY AND THE CONNECTION OF OUR SOULS BONDED TO ITS MELODY. HARDCORE IS LOVE.

TOGC - YOU'VE RE-RECORD YOUR OLD STUFF AND PLANNING TO DO A FULL LENGTH. HAVE YOU ALREADY HAVE A CONCRETE PLANS FOR THIS PROJECT? I MEAN, WHAT LABEL, HOW MANY SONGS?

NPIS - YES, WE WILL FINISH THE FULL LENGTH ENTITLED "LIKE WHEAT BEFORE THE SICKLE". WE ARE NOT YET SURE HOW MANY SONGS WILL BE INCLUDED ON THE ALBUM BECAUSE WE ARE STILL CONTINOUSLY WRITING NEW SONGS EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. IT WILL BE RELEASED UNDER OUR OWN LABEL PAINSIDE RECORDS WITH SOME HELP FROM FRIENDS.

TOGC - "THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE". ALSO, THE BEST HARDCORE SHOWS ARE FREE. WHAT MAKE YOU DECIDE TO ORGANIZE A FREE SHOW IN YOU AREA, AND DO YOU HAVE ANY PROJECTS THAT'S GOING TO BE "FREE OF CHARGE"?

NPIS - IT'S A CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM AND THE BEST WAY TO EXPRESS OUR SINCERITY IS THROUGH THE FOUR LETTER WORD, "FREE". LET'S SHARE THE MUSIC TO THE PEOPLE. THE ONES WHO ARE WILLING TO LISTEN. LET US SHARE THE LIGHT TO THOSE SHALLOW MINDED PEOPLE AND LET THEM FEEL WHAT IS LIKE TO BE FREE. LET THEM FEEL THE EMOTIONS OF EVERY RIFF AND THE CRIES OF THE GUITAR FEEDBACK KILLING THE STAGE. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW THE MUSIC WILL AFFECT THEIR HEARTS THE TIME THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT IT REALLY MEANS. THIS MAY CHANGE THEIR LIVES, LIKE THE WAY IT CHANGED OURS.

TOGC - WHAT ARE YOUR STRATEGIES FOR SURVIVAL?

NPIS - NO NAME, NO HOPE, YET WE CHOOSE TO STAND.

TOGC - CAN YOU PLEASE TELL US ABOUT ISSUES THAT YOU REALLY FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT RIGHT NOW AND WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

NPIS - THERE IS WAR EVERYWHERE AND OUR POLITICIANS ARE BUSY ENDORSING BEAUTY PRODUCTS PREPARING FOR THE UPCOMING ELECTIONS. THAT IS HOW FUCKED UP THIS WORLD IS. WHILE OUR SOCIETY LOOKS UP TO THESE PEOPLE LIKE THEY ARE GOOD EXAMPLES OF A SUCCESSFUL LIFE, THERE ARE SOME WHO ARE DYING FROM HUNGER AND SOME EVEN KILL THEMSELVES JUST TO ESCAPE POVERTY. WE ARE ALL SUFFERING BUT WE MUST NOT LET THEM TAKE AWAY OUR HOPE. SO GO FEED THE HUNGRY, SING A SONG FOR THE LONELY, BE A FRIEND TO YOUR ENEMY AND IN TIMES OF WAR, ALWAYS WEAR THE SIGN OF PEACE.

TOGC - IT'S CHEAPER TO DOWNLOAD MUSIC (BOOKS, ZINE AND COMIX). DO YOU SUPPORT DOWNLOADING DESPITE OF THE FACT THAT THERE'S A BIG CORPORATION CONTROLLING THIS STUFF?

NPIS - THE MOMENT YOU TURN ON YOUR COMPUTER, YOU ARE ALREADY USING A PRODUCT MANUFACTURED BY BLOOD SUCKING CORPORATE GIANTS. THIS INTERVIEW IS CREATED THROUGH AN APPLICATION CREATED FOR THE CORPORATE WORLD. WE ARE GRATEFUL THEY HAVE INVENTED THIS THING CALLED THE INTERNET, A PLACE WHERE FREEDOM REALLY EXISTS. SO I SAY WHY NOT SUCK THEIR BLOOD TOO?

TOGC - DO YOU BELIEVE IN HIGHER BEING OR FOLLOWING A SPECIFIC RELIGION?

NPIS - I THINK ALL OF US WERE BORN AND RAISED WITH IDEAS WE REALLY BELIEVED IN BUT AS WE GROW OLDER,WE EXPAND OUR KNOWLEDGE AND LEARN TO THINK FOR OURSELVES. I CAME FROM A VERY RELIGIOUS FAMILY. I RESPECT THE FREEDOM OF CHOICE. PEOPLE HAS THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHAT TO BELIEVE IN BUT FOR ME, THIS IS JUST ANOTHER WAY OF DIVIDING PEOPLE. RELIGION IS THEIR GUIDE ON HOW TO LIVE A MORAL AND RIGHTEOUS LIFE ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SOME WHO WOULD KILL IN THEIR GOD'S NAME. MUSIC MUST UNITE WHAT RELIGION HAS DIVIDED. SO FAREWELL TO THE GODS, THEY'RE NOT FOR ME. MUSIC IS MY RELIGION.

TOGC - DO YOU HAVE ANY MESSAGE TO THE WHOLE HARDCORE PUNK COMMUNITY, ANY CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENT?

NPIS - NEVER STOP BELIEVING!

Krissi Vegan Action - About Life, Punk rock, Veganism, etc...

If you've read Slug & Lettuce zine, you are probably aware about Krissi - the vegan activists in charged with "Vegan Action" column in S&L where anti-authoritarian / punk ideology and veganism / animal rights meet. As far as i know, Krissi is one f the pioneer (correct me if i'm wrong) of nonprofit organization animal rights group called Vegan Action, a Richmond, Virginia-based group dedicated to helping animals, environment, and human health through educating the public regarding the importance and benefits of a cruelty-free lifestyle. n addition to organizing public outreach campaigns, Krissi is also a punk mom and busy on raising vegan kids. Here’s that interview. (this interview was done couple of years back.. )

TOGC: Hi Krissi, introduce yourself and what are your activities in the scene?

Krissi- Krissi Vandenberg, 33 years old, momma of a 9 month old baby named arrow, I work for vegan action and go to graduate school for sociology for the most part I go to shows and have vegan action tables at shows and local events. I also helped organize Lady Fest Richmond last year. I try to be a vegan inspiration for people in the scene. It’s good to see someone that is 33 and still holding true.

TOGC: Could you please share to us how’s life their in Richmond. I've red in Slug N' Lettuce that you guys have a very active punk scene there.

Krissi- Richmond is an interesting little city. It is the southern capital still holding on to a lot of outdated ideas but it has a blooming music and art scene at the same time. so, I can walk to the market and see people I know and still get to see some good shows in town. We have a college here that attracts a lot of folks and helps keep the political groups, artists, and musicians well populated. We also have a decent amount of activists for the size of the city. We have a strong pro-choice movement going as well as a political info shop, a queer run space, and a very successful food not bombs program. Vegan action is very supported in the scene although vegans are becoming fewer and fewer for some reason. Most of the time folks make vegan food for events because they do believe it is the best option even if they are not vegan themselves.

TOGC: What kind/style of music you are into? How/where do you get a record and what is you’re favorite record?
Krissi- I like all music except for new country. Yes, I even like gospel. We have a great little record store in town that has a great selection, especially for vinyl. That’s where I get most of my music. I’ve been known to buy one or two from e-bay. I can name my five favorite albums: Jawbreaker - 24 Revenge Therapy, Propagandhi - Less Talk, More Rock , Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane over the Sea , Fugazi - First album (self titled) , and Sleater-Kinney - Call the Doctor

TOGC: Are you a sXe? If you are, into what extent?

 Krissi- nope, not straight-edge.

TOGC:  In your column in SNL, most of your writings are about in the scene, instead veganism. Why?

Krissi- well, I like to mix it up and I don't like to preach. I like to offer information about veganism but within a context that folks can relate to. Veganism is a lifestyle, it's not just about what you eat or wear. The scene is a part of veganism and veganism is a part of the scene.

TOGC:  What sort of feedback do you receive? How do you feel about it?

Krissi- I have only had positive feedback about my column, I’m happy to say. I have had some folks question things I’ve said or opinions I’ve taken but that is a good thing. I like to debate, I like to hear other people's ideas and opinions. That’s the best way to learn and better understand ourselves.

TOGC: How often do you receive insults and criticism (unconstructive and mostly talking shit about you) about  about your lifestyle? Have you been in a fight because someone’s insult you?
Krissi- I rarely have been insulted or criticized. I’ve been teased and I’ve heard the same bad jokes for a really long time. But no, I’ve never fought about it. If someone tries to pick a verbal fight about it I just walk away because I realize it is not worth my time. I would rather spend my time being positive and talking to people who are open and truly interested. I’ve never felt that I needed to physically defend my beliefs or lifestyle. I’m all about being non-violent.

TOGC: About veganism, when did you start practicing it? Who introduce you to that lifestyle/idea?

Krissi- I became vegetarian in high school and vegan in 1994. I had been reading books and pamphlets about food choices and I was initially inspired to become vegan by a friend here in Richmond from a band Four Walls Falling. My boyfriend was in the band and hanging out with Tyler really helped me become vegan and know what and how to eat. Sadly, he is no longer vegan (it broke my heart to find that out a few years ago).

TOGC:  Who teach you how to cook? Can you share to us your top 3 favorite recipe?

Krissi- i have lived with a lot of great vegan cooks in the last ten years which has really helped me out tremendously. i think learning how to make nutritional yeast cheese has been the most exciting food item for me as well as making kick ass vegan desserts. my three favorite things to make right now are:

Nutritional yeast cheese:
/2 c. nutritional yeast flakes 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. garlic powder
2 c. water 1/4 c. margarine

1 tsp. wet mustard 2 tbsp. soy sauce.

Mix dry ingredients in a sauce pan. Whisk in water. Cook over medium heat, stirring, until thick and bubbling. Remove from heat and whip in the rest of the ingredients. It will thicken as it cools.

Lentil Dhal:
3 tbsp oil 1 chopped onion
2 crushed garlic cloves 2 tsp grated ginger
1 tsp chili powder 1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 cup green lentils 1/2 cup red lentils
2 cups water salt and pepper to taste

Sauté onion and garlic in the oil until soft. Mix in the spices and ginger with a little of the water in the pan. Add the rest of the water and the lentils and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes.

Peanut butter balls:
1 cup peanut butter 1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup margarine 1 pound of confectioners sugar
2 cups crushed graham crackers.

Mix peanut butter, margarine, sugar and graham crackers together and roll into balls. Melt the chocolate chips by double boiling and pour over the peanut butter balls. Serve chilled.

TOGC:  Do you plant your own veggies? Do you have a garden or farm? Is it organic or what?

Krissi- Yes, I do have a nice little organic farm. In my front yard I have cucumbers and broccoli as well as a lot of herbs and in the back yard I have tomatoes, okra and yellow squash. It is so rewarding to grow your own food if you have the space. It is really awesome to give people food that you have grown yourself from seeds.

TOGC:  Can you tell us something about the animal right/liberation movement in the Virginia?

Krissi- It waxes and wanes. Animal rights used to be more of a priority in the mid-nineties but now most everyone has dropped it and focuses just on human issues. It makes me sad but there are still a good handful of us keeping things together and still making things happen. We still have hope that activists will see that all efforts for equality and happiness are connected.

TOGC:  What is the most unforgettable experience do you have during protest?

Krissi- one of the most amazing experiences was protesting the circus many years ago and a woman who had a ticket to go to the circus decided not to go and even grabbed a sign and joined the protest, that was bad ass.

TOGC: Speaking of protest or should I say direct action, have you bombed some slaughter houses or threw a bricks in at the glass window of McDonalds, burger king and the likes? What can you say to those people who do that?

Krissi- I cannot answer that but I do suggest that folks focus on converting people to veganism instead of focusing on direct action. I am a supporter of liberation but as long as there is a demand, there will be a supply. That is why we have got to get rid of the demand for animals as products buy educating people to do the right thing and become vegan.

TOGC:  Any thoughts you'd like to share on the state of the world today.... with wars, terrorism treats, poverty and environmental issues?

Krissi- I just keep reminding myself not to give up. Looking at the world today and all of the atrocities and injustices going on, it is hard to keep working towards a better future. it is really hard to have faith in humanity when there are people in power making such horrific decisions that affect the lives of so many innocent people. I just keep thinking about working toward a true democracy and sharing a world with people in a positive and caring way. We have a long way to go but I just refuse to give up. I have a tattoo that says "hope" as a daily reminder.

TOGC:  Favorite animal rights slogan.

Krissi- Human freedom, animal rights, all part of the same fight!

TOGC:  Your favorite cartoon characters beside from bugs the vegan bunny.

Krissi- Stewie, from The Family Guy.

TOGC:  The last question, if you are a vegetable what kind of vegetable you are and why?

Krissi- An eggplant. They have an awesome color, shape, and are shiny and a little bit toxic.

TOGC:  I think this interview long enough, thank you very much for answering this, now you can say whatever you want to… Thanks again Krissi, and VIVA-LA VEGAN!!!

Krissi- thanx xoox

Light Bearer - Lapsus

Sounds wise, it seems like this is the continuation of the last album of the UK-based vegan-atheist Fall of Efrafa - Inle, and probably could've tag this with post-hardcore too, or maybe they will fall under sludge or post-metal genre. Musically, Lapsus reminds me of Envy, Sigur Ros, early Baroness, Red Sparrowes, Mouth of the Architect, Amenra, and Cult of Luna. Two members of the FoE, Alex and Lee, are part of this atheist or anti-theist new  band, and just like FOE, Light Bearer and Lapsus are a concept. But this time, instead of conferring about talking hares and bunnies fighting each other (Watership Down), they offer something traditional and interesting, Lucifer. Light Bearer, according to Wikipedia, is the literal translation of Lucifer. And yes, “Lucifer is the first freethinker” and the purveyor of intelligence and free will. And just like FoE, Light Bearer is a “book band” and the concepts are flowing around the book “Paradise Lost” by John Milton, “His Dark Materials” by Philip Pullman, and the book of Genesis that was written by the non-existing lord Jesus himself and the almighty ghost writer. And Lapsus is the first offering of the band and the other album will be named as Silver Tongue, Magisterium, and Lattermost Sword.

I am a huge fan of FoE, from the neo-crust Owsla, to the experimental three 20-minutes something songs Elil, and to the post-hardcore and final album Inle. But personally, I can say that I like this one better than the FoE.

OFF-Line Zine Interview - An In-Depth Interview With Vincent and Claire

Very proud to present to you the interview I did couple of years back. Off-Line is a personal zine that  incorporates veganism and anarchist philosophy and a "good dose of humor." This zine is definitely a MUST have for all zinester out there. This is really personal, reading through the pages of the zine will make you feel that you knew them personally and it feels like you are fully attached to them. Don't get me wrong,no love stories in here, it is filled with emotions, humors, daily experiences, and a lot more. Yes, this is far better than the usual romance pocketbook and their likes. Ah, nuff said. just read on... BTW: the interview was conducted through snail mail.

TOGC: HI VINCENT AND CLAIRE, WHAT'S GOING ON? PLEASE TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELVES AND YOUR ZINE.

VINCENT: I AM 7'6", 435 POUNDS OF PURE MUSCLE, AND LIKE TO SMELL BASIL LEAVES. WELL, ONLY THE LAST ITEM IS TRUE. RIGHT NOW I'M LISTENING TO HEAVY ATMOSPHERIC MUSIC BECAUSE IT SUITS THE NIGHTTIME AND THE CHILL OUTSIDE. I'M DISGUSTED AT THE STATE OF THE WORLD, BUT I'M NOT SURE EXACTLY WHAT MY CALLING IS, TO BE HONEST. I'M 32, I LIKE TO WRITE ARTICLES ABOUT LIFE IN OUR ZINE, AND I GET MY KICKS FROM READING, ROCKING OUT TO OLD SEPULTURA, ROOTING FOR THE METS, HIKING WHEN THE LEAVES TURN IN AUTUMN, SLAMMING NET BALLS IN TENNIS, AND TRYING TO MAKE MY PARTNER CLAIRE LAUGH AT MY FOOLISHNESS!

CLAIRE: I'M A 33-YEAR-OLD HIGH SCHOOL SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER. IF I COULD BE ANYTHING OTHER THAN A TEACHER, I WOULD BE A MODERN DANCER. I LOVE SWIMMING IN THE OCEAN. OFF-LINE IS GEARED FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE OPEN MINDS AND WHO VALUE NONVIOLENCE.

TOGC: OFF-LINE ZINE IS MORE ON A PERSONAL LEVEL WITH A BIT TOUCH OF POLITICS TO ADD SOME SPICE. READING QFF-LINE IS LIKE READING A PERSONAL DIARY THAT'S FILLED WITH ALL CONCEIVABLE THINGS. WHY IS THAT?

VINCENT: IF YOU READ MY DIARY (WHICH I STOPPED KEEPING A FEW YEARS AGO, BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE THE TIME TO DO IT ANYMORE), YOU'D KNOW OUR ZINE IS NOTHING LIKE IT. COME ON, DO YOU SEE ANY "HELLO KITTY" STICKERS ON THE COVER OF OUR ZINE?! SURE, I LIKE TO BE PERSONAL IN O-L, BECAUSE 1 WELCOME ALL WHO READ IT AS FRIENDS, AND ALSO BECAUSE I DO BELIEVE THAT THE PERSONAL IS POLITICAL. HOWEVER, MV DIARIES AND LETTERS HAVE MANY TANGENTS AND EMOTIONAL OUTBURSTS THAT NEED TO BE FILTERED OUT, SO THE KERNEL OF A STORY INSIDE CAN BE POLISHED AND MADE PRESENTABLE FOR A LARGER AUDIENCE. JUST LOOK AT MY "ANATOMY OF A LOVE LETTER" (IN O-L #37), THE ABRIDGED VERSION OF MY 47-PAGE PLEA FOR A GIRL'S AFFECTION MANY YEARS AGO, WHICH I ORIGINALLY WROTE IN MY DIARY. IT WAS SO ATROCIOUSLY NAIVE! SO WHEN I READ IT AGAIN ONE DAY, I COULD SEE IT WAS RIPE FOR ALL KINDS OF JOVIAL MOCKERY. I AM NOT EMBARRASSED BY MUCH, BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE SOME IMAGE OF PERFECTION I'M TRYING TO UPHOLD. AND I AM NOT GOING TO AVOID POTENTIALLY UNPLEASANT TOPICS, BECAUSE LIFE WITHOUT CONFLICT (AND, THEREFORE, WITHOUT GROWTH) IS BORING, SO ANYTHING IS FAIR GAME.

CLAIRE: I GUESS WE STARTED O-L AS A WAY TO PROMOTE OUR VIEWS AND RAISE AWARENESS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES AMONG OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. AT THE TIME, WE WERE MORE INVOLVED IN POLITICAL DEMONSTRATIONS. SO WE'VE WRITTEN POLITICAL CRITIQUES OR, SOMETIMES, RANTS, IN THE ZINE. NOW THE ZINE SERVES MORE AS A MEANS TO COMMUNICATE WHAT'S GOING ON IN OUR LIVES. WE'RE INTERESTED IN THE LITTLE DAILY ADVENTURES THAT LIFE BRINGS, SO SOMETIMES WE DON'T WRITE POLITICAL ARTICLES AT ALL. I LIKE TO WRITE FICTION, SO OCCASIONALLY WE INCLUDE SHORT STORIES. I'M VEGETARIAN, AND VINCE IS VEGAN; WE BOTH ENJOY COOKING, AND EVERYONE LOVES TO EAT, SO WE INCLUDE OUR VEGAN RECIPES IN IT, TOO. YOU'RE RIGHT, O-L HAS A LITTLE OF EVERYTHING IN IT.

TOGC: DO YOU CONSIDER OFF-LINE AS AN ANARCHIST PERSONAL ZINE?

CLAIRE: THAT PHRASE BRINGS TO MY MIND A CERTAIN AESTHETIC—VERY HARD-CORE, SERIOUS POLITICAL WRITING.  VINCENT WILL WRITE PIECES LIKE THAT, BUT AS 1 SAID BEFORE, O-L ADDRESSES A VARIETY OF TOPICS IN A VARIETY OF TONES, SO IT'S HARD TO LABEL.

VINCENT: IT IS FOR ME, ALTHOUGH 1 ALSO LIKE THE TERM "FREETHINKING," AND WOULD BE CONTENT IF SOMEONE CALLED O-L THAT, TOO. THERE ARE MANY WAYS OF BEING ANTI-AUTHORITARIAN, AND I HOPE THAT'S REFLECTED IN OUR WRITING.

TOGC: AS FAR AS I KNOW, YOU HAVE PUT OUT 36 ISSUES OF OFF-LINE (WOW!). CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO MAKE A ZINE? WHAT IS THE ZINE'S PURPOSE AND GOAL?

VINCENT: WE'RE WORKING ON OUR 40TH NOW! WHEN WE DID THE FIRST ISSUE IN 1999, I HAD NO IDEA WHAT A ZINE WAS. HOWEVER, THE WAR RESISTERS LEAGUE IN NEW YORK HAD A YOUTH PUBLICATION CALLED AWOL THAT WAS A ZINE, FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, AND I MODELED O-L ON THAT. THE MANY HUNDREDS OF ZINES I'VE READ SINCE HAVE NO DOUBT INFLUENCED WHAT WE PUT OUT. THERE IS NEVER A SHORTAGE OF HOMBLE STUFF TO DENOUNCE, AND 1 STILL HAVE A BOXFUL OF STORIES I WANT TO TELL. BASICALLY, I JUST WANT PEOPLE TO LOVE US, MAN!

TOGC: WHERE DO YOU GET THE INSPIRATION TO WRITE ON CERTAIN TOPICS THAT OFF-LIME TACKLES?

CLAIRE: EVERYDAY, THERE SEEMS TO BE SOMETHING THAT ENRAGES EITHER ONE OF US. IT COULD BE ANYTHING FROM RUDE PEOPLE ON THE STREET TO DESTRUCTIVE U.S. FOREIGN POLICY IN IRAQ. O-L IS A PLACE TO VENT HOWEVER, 1 AM ALSO INSPIRED BY POSITIVE EXPERIENCES, SUCH AS THE FUNNV MOMENTS FROM THE CLASS ON WOMEN IN U.S. HISTORY I TEACH (O-L #39). OCCASIONALLY, THE INSPIRATION COMES FROM PAIN, SUCH AS WHEN MY MOTHER DIED FROM CANCER (O-F, #36).

TOGC: YOU PRINT ALL THE CORRESPONDENCE YOU RECEIVE (RIGHT?), FROM COMPLIMENTS TO INSULTS—I GUESS YOU DON'T GET MUCH INSULTED. WHY? HOW OFTEN DO YOU RECEIVE LETTERS? DO YOU MANAGE TO REPLY ON THEM ALL?

VINCENT: WHAT YOU SEE IN OUR READERS' FORUM IS WHAT WE GET, FOR THE MOST PART. FOF ME, THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE ZINE, BECAUSE WHO WANTS TO TALK JUST TO HEAR THEMSELVES TALK? JUST ABOUT EVERYONE IN NEW YORK, ACTUALLY . . . IT WOULDN'T BE WORTH DOING WITHOUT THAT INTERACTION AND FEEDBACK. I LIKE WHEN SOMETHING I WRITE BECOMES THE SPRINGBOARD FOR YOU TO SHARE SOME THOUGHTS OF YOUR OWN. I DO TRY TO KEEP UP WITH ALL OF OUR CORRESPONDENCE. IF ONLY WE COULD BE PAID FOR THE THINGS WE LOVE TO DO! INSTEAD, WE HAVE TO PAY WITH OUR PRECIOUS TIME TO DO THE THINGS WE LOVE ...

TOGC: HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE ON YOUR MAILING LIST? HOW MANY COPIES DO YOU PRODUCE? HOW DO YOU DISTRIBUTE IT AROUND THE GLOBE?

VINCENT: MORE THAN 1,200 PEOPLE HAVE READ O-L IN THE HISTORY OF THE ZINE—ABOUT 6 BILLION SHORT OF WORLD DOMINATION, HA HA! THERE'S 100-150 COPIES OF ANY GIVEN ISSUE, SO OBVIOUSLY MOST PEOPLE GET BORED WITH IT AFTER A WHILE. MAYBE WE SHOULD BE WRITING MORE ABOUT BRAD PITT AND PARIS HILTON, EH? BUT NEW PEOPLE ALWAYS COME IN WHEN OLD READERS DROP AWAY,' AND THERE'S ALWAYS BEEN A NICE CORE OF FANS WHO'VE BEEN ALONG FOR THE LONG RIDE. WE'RE NOT VERY AGGRESSIVE ABOUT PUBLICIZING IT—MOST DISTROS ARE UNRELIABLE, I'VE FOUND, AND WE DON'T HAVE A WEB PRESENCE. (WE'RE OFF-LINE, RIGHT?) WE GET REVIEWS SOMETIMES IN OTHER PEOPLE'S ZINES, AND I'VE GONE TO A COUPLE OF UNDERGROUND PRESS FAIRS. THAT'S ABOUT IT.

TOGC: personally i love “faux meat” because it allows me to recreate some old time favorite family recipes, and also because they are a snap to prepare-especially if i'll feeding  non-vegetarians,  but still, im happy and content with my veggies and tofu! I noticed one thing in the recipes you've featured in OFF LINe, that is you dont put meat substitutes or fuax meat products in the ingredients list, why? Whats your opinion about soy mock, meat/faux meat?

Claire: recently we learned in annother zine (scissor socket shocker) that fake meat products have monosodium glutamate or msg-like substances, although it is listed on the packaging as “yeast extract,” spices” or artificial flavors,” and consuming these foods  may contribute to deleterious effects.  I love the taste of fake sausage, but is it worth it? We try to use as few processed products in our recipes as  possible.

Vincent: you must have missed our older issues which includes recipes like “chick n sir fry”with seitan (o-l #24) and soysage and sandwiches (o-l #26), plus there is the “mexenglish breakfast” with fakin bacon in O-L #39. I have enjoyed all kinds of meats of fake meats, but prefer to use whole foods in our recipes rather than be dewpendent on some feceless corporation for my well-being. Do you know that tricalcium phospate is? Me niether.

TOGC: on the first page if every issue of yur zine, there is a line saying “unravel yourself from the web and get offline.” Could you please  further explain your opinion why yoou refuse ti use the internet or computer?

Claire: i find internet invaluable for my work. I use it at school and retain a free e-mail account through my old college.  My objection to the internet is that having it in my home would be a huge  and tim-suck (as well, as cost money easily and bring unwanted viruses onto my computer). I know myself, and i know that i could easily spend hours online.  I try to read a book or magazine or write in my journal in my limited  free time.

Vincent: OL is produced on a computer word processor, and i make my living by using computers.  Moreover, if i opposed the world wide web absolutely, i woudn't be able to devastate my unsuspecting opponents with a clever checkmates while playing internet chess at work.  It is very addictive however so i agree with claire- i might not do anything else if i had it at home.  I dont want my email account because i prefer the DEPTH AND special attention of personal correspondence to the superficiality of most email communication.  We dont buy the latest upgrades and use our old computer hardware as long as possible to minimize waste and putting toxics into landfields.  I never heard anything about going blind from looking too much at computer monitors, though.  I thought blindness came from masturvation.  THAT’S what they used to tach in catholic high school.

TOGC: Claire, as a public school teacher and I'm very sure that you love what youre doing.  So what do you teach?  How do you deal with the relationship-gap between teachers students? And as a TEACHER, HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY EDUCATION IS REALLY IMPORTANT?

CLAIRE: RIGHT NOW, I TEACH GLOBAL STUDIES (A REQUIRED CLASS) AND TWO ELECTIVE CLASSES: WORLD WAR II AND THE VIETNAM WAR, AND WOMEN IN AMERICAN HISTORY. I DO LOVE TEACHING, BUT IT IS VERY DIFFICULT, STRESSFUL, AND TIME-CONSUMING. I CAN NEVER WAKE UP AND SAY, "OH, I FEEL LIKE SLEEPING IN AND GOING TO WORK LATE." PLANNING IS EVERYTHING—EVEN MY ABSENCES REQUIRE SOME PLANNING. I FEEL PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT I TEACH, SO DOING A HALF-ASSED JOB IS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO ME. BUT THAT COMMITMENT SOMETIMES IMPACTS MY PERSONAL LIFE, BECAUSE I HAVE LESS TIME TO DO MY PERSONAL PROJECTS OR JUST HANG OUT WITH FRIENDS. IT'S A CONSTANT BALANCING ACT.  I BELIEVE IT IS WORTHWHILE, HOWEVER, BECAUSE I AM TEACHING YOUNG PEOPLE ABOUT PERSONAL AND GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY, THE IMPORTANCE OF QUESTIONING AUTHORITY (MINE INCLUDED), AND ACTIVISM. I DID DIRECT ORGANIZING WORK FOR AWHILE, AND I OFTEN FELT LIKE I WAS PREACHING TO THE CHOIR. YET IT WAS THE RARE ADULT WHO WAS WILLING TO REALESE THEIR LONG-HELD BELIEFS BECAUSE OF MY PERSISTENCE. I THINK YOUNG PEOPLE ARE MUCH MORE OPEN TO CHANGING THEIR IDEAS. IF THE WORLD IS EVER GOING TO GROW LESS VIOLENT AND MORE JUST, IT WILL BECAUSE OF A GENERATIONAL SHIFT IN VALUES. THESE STUDENTS LIVE IN A PRIVILEGED BUBBLE, AND I'D LIKE TO THINK THAT I'M OPENING UP THEIR MINDS TO NEW PERSPECTIVES AND CHALLENGING THEM TO DO SOMETHING WORTHWHILE WITH THEIR LIVES. AS TO THE QUESTION OF A "RELATIONSHIP GAP," I ASSUME YOU MEAN THE HIERARCHICAL POSITION I HOLD AS "AUTHORITY FIGURE" WITH THE POWER TO PASS OR FAIL, OR TO MAKE SOME STUDENTS' LIVES MISERABLE AND OTHERS' EASY. I TRY TO MAINTAIN A DEGREE OF DISTANCE SO THAT WE CAN GET SOMETHING ACCOMPLISHED WITH THE ASSIGNED CURRICULUM. I AM NOT THERE TO BE THEIR FRIEND, BUT I AM VERY FRIENDLY, AND I DO SHOW MY PERSONAL SIDE AT TIMES. I GOT MY STUDENTS' ATTENTION ONCE WHEN A GIRL WAS WONDERING IF SHE COULD CHANGE HER ETHNICITY. SHE SAID SHE HATED HER ITALIAN HERITAGE. I SAID YOU CAN'T CHANGE THE FAMILY OR GROUP YOU'RE BORN INTO, BUT YOU CAN TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR OWN VALUES. I EXPLAINED HOW MY ITALIAN AND IRISH FAMILY WAS WORRIED AT FIRST WHEN I BECAME VEGETARIAN. THE KIDS LOVE LEARNING LITTLE DETAILS LIKE THAT ABOUT THEIR TEACHERS, AND HAD ALL SORTS OF QUESTIONS FOR ME ABOUT BEING VEGETARIAN. THAT'S A GREAT MOMENT, AND IT'S WHEN REAL LEARNING HAPPENS.

TOGC: VINCENT, CAN YOU TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR WORK? WHAT DO YOU DO? DO YOU STILL PAY YOUR TAXES?

VINCENT: I WROTE ABOUT MY JOB AT THE EDUCATIONAL BOOK PUBLISHER IN O-L #37 ("TRUTH IN EDITING"). IT PAYS THE BILLS AND SOMETIMES CAN BE REWARDING. I DON'T PAY MY TAXES BECAUSE I'M OPPOSED TO HOW THE U.S. GOVERNMENT WASTES HALF OF EVERY DOLLAR ON ITS MURDEROUS MILITARY ACTIONS ABROAD, AND THIS LED ME TO LEAVE MY PREVIOUS JOB TO PREVENT THE TAX COLLECTORS FROM TAKING MY MONEY (SEE O-L #31). IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN, SO I DON'T GET VERY ATTACHED TO MY WORK. IT IS A DIFFICULT LIFESTYLE, BUT MY CONSCIENCE WON'T ALLOW ME TO LIVE ANY OTHER WAY. AND I HAVE TO SAY, AS IT'S BEEN 10 YEARS SO FAR OF A SUCCESSFUL MINI-REBELLION, IT FEELS GOOD TO KNOW THE SYSTEM DOESN'T HAVE TOTAL POWER OVER MY LIFE!

TOGC:  COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT LIFE IN THE USA ? IN NEW YORK?

VINCENT: I TAKE THE TRAIN TO THE CITY AND SQUEEZE THROUGH THE RUSH HOUR CROWDS TO GET TO WORK. SOMETIMES AFTERWARD I WILL GO TO A VEGAN RESTAURANT FOR DINNER AND THEN SEE A METAL SHOW AT A CLUB. THEN IT IS ALWAYS SO NICE TO COME HOME TO MY QUIET APARTMENT TO RELAX. ON HOLIDAYS WE LIKE TO DRIVE NORTH TO SEE WATERFALLS AND HIKE IN THE MOUNTAINS.

CLAIRE: NEW YORK IS GREAT FOR A LOT OF THINGS. WE HAVE ACCESS TO A WEALTH OF FOOD, MUSIC, AND ART FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD. SURPRISINGLY, THE RADIO STATIONS SUCK. IT’S ALL CORPORATE PLAYLISTS AND MORNING SHOWS GEARED TOWARD THE LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR.
WE LIVE IN THE SUBURBS 20 MILES NORTH OF THE CITY, AND WHILE IT IS CONVENIENT HERE, PEOPLE TEND TO BE RUDE AND IN A HURRY ALL THE TIME. I FAVOR SMALLER PLACES AND FRIENDLIER PEOPLE.

TOGC: THERE IS NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT AMERICA IS THE GREATEST AND MOST POWERFUL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. I ASSUME THAT PEOPLE LIVING IN AMERICA ARE FAR LUCKIER THAN THOSE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE THIRD WORLD, LIKE THE COUNTRY WHERE I LIVE—I GUESS YOU KNOW OUR SITUATION HERE. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

VINCENT: IT'S OFTEN HARD FOR ME TO COPE BECAUSE SO MANY PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY, EVEN IN THE SUPPOSEDLY ENLIGHTENED NEW YORK, REFUSE TO QUESTION THE INDOCTRINATED ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT HOW OUR DEMOCRACY OR AFFLUENCE MAKES US SUPERIOR. SURE, YOU CAN CRITICIZE PRESIDENT BUSH (ALTHOUGH MANY STILL BELIEVE IN HIM, NO MATTER HOW MANY CRIMES HE ENACTS!), BUT CAN'T EVER SUGGEST THAT THE USA ISN'T THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. ANYONE WHO STUDIES HIDDEN U.S. HISTORY WILL KNOW THIS IS A HARMFUL MYTH—JUST LOOK AT THE SAVAGERY OF U.S. SOLDIERS IN THE PHILIPPINES IN 1899!—WHICH ALLOWS OUR GOVERNMENT TO KEEP DOING THINGS LIKE THE INVASION OF IRAQ AND MINIMALLY HELPING THE POOR PEOPLE OF COLOR WHO LOST THEIR HOMES IN HURRICANE KATRINA. SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE I WANT TO MOVE TO CANADA. ALL GOVERNMENTS ARE CORRUPT, BUT IT IS THE ONES WITH THE MOST POWER THAT DO THE MOST DAMAGE.

CLAIRE: I HAVE SOME EXPERIENCE TRAVELING TO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, AND I HAVE OF COURSE STUDIED MANY NATIONS, AND I THINK IT'S CLEAR THAT FOR MOST AMERICANS, THE STANDARD OF LIVING IS HIGHER THAN FOR PEOPLE IN OTHER COUNTRIES. BUT THERE IS KIND OF A THIRD WORLD WITHIN AMERICA, THAT SUFFERS FROM POLICE ABUSE, VIOLENCE, AND OFFICIAL NEGLECT, AND THAT IS THE WORKING POOR AND/OR POOR COMMUNITIES OF COLOR.

TOGC: RIGHT NOW, SO MANY PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO HATE AMERICA due to the ONGOING WAR AT THE MIDDLE EAST. AND primarily BECAUSE OF THE U.S. GOVERNMENT ACTING AS THE WORLD POLICE AND PEACEMAKERS. WHAT'S YOUR OPINION ON THAT?

CLAIRE: CAN'T BLAME THEM.

VINCENT:  IT IS NEVER GOING TO END BECAUSE AMERICANS ENJOY THEIR EXPENSIVE GADGETS AND NEED THE ENERGY TO POWER THEM. SO AS LONG AS WE ARE DEPENDENT ON OTHER NATIONS FOR OIL, ETC., WE WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET WHAT WE WANT... MAYBE EVEN ALLOW HIJACKED PLANES TO FLY INTO OUR TALL BUILDINGS SO WE CAN HAVE AN EXCUSE TO START A GLOBAL WAR?

TOGC: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT AMERICANS WHO SPEAK AGAINST AMERICA? Most Commies / leftist abused this phrase.

CLAIRE: AS ONE OF THEM, I APPROVE! WE'VE BEEN IN SPORTS STADIUMS WHERE THEY PLAY THE NATIONAL ANTHEM AND EVERYONE IS STANDING, EXCEPT US. AND NO, NO ONE HAS EVER TOSSED THEIR BEER ON US! YAY FOR FREE SPEECH! SO I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM SPEAKING AGAINST AMERICAN POLICY. I'D RATHER NOT IDENTIFY MYSELF AS AN AMERICAN ANYWAY. I AM A CITIZEN OF THE WORLD.

VINCENT: IT IS TIRESOME AT TIMES TO HEAR LEFTISTS REPEAT THE SAME REFRAINS. I'D RATHER TALK MORE ABOUT VISIONS FOR A NEW COUNTRY—OR, BETTER YET, SMALLER AND MORE SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES BASED ON PRINCIPLES OF PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, INTERDEPENDENCE, ETHICAL ACTION, COOPERATION, AND MUTUAL AID.

TOGC: BACK TO THE ZINE, PLEASE SHARE WITH US YOUR TOP THREE FAVORITE AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ZINES.

VINCENT:

  1. IMAGINE (PRACTICAL ANARCHIST PHILOSOPHY) AND DON'T HAVE A COW (VEGAN RECIPES). JOHN JOHNSON, P.O. BOX 8145, RENO, NV 89507 USA.
  2. MIRANDA (STORIES OF A STAY-AT-HOME MOM). KATE HAAS, 3510 SE ALDER STREET, PORTLAND, OR 97214 USA.
  3. VOW (STORIES OF A PUNK ARTIST). KEITH ROSSON, 1426 SE 25TH #3, PORTLAND, OR 97214 USA.

TOGC: MUSIC: EVERY TIME I'VE HEARD THE WORDS "NEW YORK," THE FIRST THOUGHT THAT CAME TO MIND IS HARDCORE/ / SAY THAT BECAUSE NEW YORK ARE WELL KNOWN IN THE HARDCORE COMMUNITY, BECAUSE BANDS LIKE NAUSEA, SICK OF IT ALL, AGNOSTIC FRONT, AND MANY MORE COME FROM YOUR AREA. SO, DO YOU STILL MANAGE TO GO TO SHOWS DESPITE BEING BUSY WITH YOUR JOB, FAMILY AND ZINE WORK?

VINCENT: I AM A GLUTTON FOR LIVE MUSIC AND GO TO ABOUT 40 SHOWS A YEAR. RECENT CONCERTS WERE SIX FEET UNDER (DEATH METAL), TOOL (PSYCHEDELIC HARD ROCK), MEGADETH (THRASH METAL), AND AEROSMITH (CLASSIC ROCK). I DON'T LISTEN TO MUCH HARDCORE, BUT THE NEW SICK OF IT ALL ALBUM, DEATH TO TYRANTS, IS VERY GOOD!

TOGC: LAST ONE: MAYBE YOU CAN TELL US WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO IN THE FOLLOWING ISSUES OF OFF-LINE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS INTERVIEW. NOW YOU CAN SAY WHATEVER YOU WANT!

VINCENT: THE 40TH ISSUE WILL HAVE MANY STORIES ABOUT OUR COMMITMENT CEREMONY THIS PAST SUMMER (AN UNOFFICIAL WEDDING NOT SANCTIONED BY THE CHURCH OR GOVERNMENT). IT WAS AN AMAZING DAY, AND SOMEHOW WE WERE ABLE TO PULL OFF A TOTAL DIY COUP—DOING NEARLY EVERY ASPECT OF IT OURSELVES, FROM ACTING AS OUR OWN WEDDING PLANNERS IN MAKING THE ARRANGEMENTS, TO CREATING OUR OWN CEREMONY FROM SCRATCH, AND EVEN COOKING AND SERVING ALL OF THE FOOD FOR 50+ PEOPLE! AS SOON AS I GET A LITTLE MORE ORGANIZED, WE ARE GOING TO SHARE EVERYTHING ABOUT HOW IT CAME TO HAPPEN, IN CASE MAYBE OTHER PEOPLE WOULD LIKE TO CONSIDER DOING IT THIS WAY FOR THEMSELVES!

CLAIRE: THANK YOU, ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE, FOR TAKING SUCH AN INTEREST IN US—WHAT? THIS IS FOR WHO? JUST KIDDING! REALLY, THANKS A LOT FOR WONDERING ABOUT US AND OUR LITTLE PROJECT. GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR OWN EFFORTS!

OFF-LINE IS FREE, LIKE ALL THINGS SHOULD BE, BUT WE ACCEPT DONATIONS GRATEFULLY. WRITE TO 35 BARKER AVENUE #4G, WHITE PLAINS, NY 10601 USA.
